Answers
1)  Q May a student attend with an adult other than his or her parent/guardian?
A
No, the parent/guardian is required to attend with the student (22.1-205). The parent/guardian will provide a DMV issued or identification number and sign the registration form stating he/she is the parent/guardian.
2)  Q May students from other area school districts attend a Manassas City Public School presentation?
A
Our current thinking is no, students must attend a program offered in their school district. However, students may attend the program at any school within their district.
3)  Q Can a 9th grade student attend the program?
A
No, the program is only open to students currently enrolled in grade 10 Physical Education/Health & Driver’s Education. The program is a part of classroom driver education. If a 9th grade student attends, he/she will need to repeat the program during 10th grade to receive a DEC-1 card.
4)  Q Is completion of this program included in the student’s grade?
A
No, the grade for driver education is determined based on assignments and assessments completed as a part of classroom instruction. A student may receive a grade in the driver education reporting if he/she has not attended the program. Completion of this program is recorded in Power School as a date of attendance, not a grade.
5)  Q If a student does not pass classroom driver education, does he/she need to repeat the program?
A
Not necessarily. Completion of the program is valid through the end of the school year in which the student took classroom driver education. It would be valid through the summer also. If the student completes classroom driver education through an outside vendor within the school year of enrollment of classroom driver education, he/she will have a certificate of completion for the parent/student program verifying successful participation.

If a student does not pass health and physical education 10 for the year, including driver education, he/she will repeat the classroom course the following year. If they have not completed classroom driver education through our program or a private vendor, they will need to complete the parent/teen program again to be issued a DEC-1 card at the completion of classroom instruction.
6)  Q What happens if a student and parent/guardian arrive late for the program?
A
The Code of Virginia requires a 90 minute presentation. Students and parent/guardians who arrive late will not be allowed to enter. Administrators and other volunteers should inform the student and parent/guardian that the program has begun and late admittance is not allowed in accordance with the law. Packets should not be given to anyone who arrives late.
7)  Q What happens if a student and parent/guardian leave early?
A
The student will not receive credit for completion of the program and will not be eligible for a DEC-1 card until the program has been attended in its entirety. Registration forms and evaluations are not to be accepted from people leaving early. This needs to be clearly communicated to students in class and to parents at the beginning of the presentation. Only one registration form may be accepted per student and parent/guardian.
8)  Q Why must the program be offered at the start of the year?
A
The 45 hour parent/teen driving guide will be issued during classroom driver education. The program shall support instruction in the classroom.
9)  Q Must students attend the program during the semester he/she is taking driver education?
A
No, but it is recommended that the program be completed during the same time frame as classroom driver education.
10)  Q Is student completion of the program recorded?
A
Yes, confirmation forms will be given to the Driver Education class room teacher and the program date will be entered into Power School. Teachers are to keep a record of students who have completed the program.
11)  Q How long must the registration forms be retained?
A
The forms must be retained for three years. It is suggested that school administration designate a central location to retain all forms in a locked drawer.
